ScaleAQ Circular opens on Frøya – A new era for sustainability in aquaculture

On September 25, 2024, ScaleAQ opened its new recycling facility, ScaleAQ Circular, in Hammarvika, Frøya. Over 200 attendees, including students, partners, customers, and local residents, gathered to celebrate this key milestone in the company’s sustainability journey.

Circular economy in practice

ScaleAQ Circular is an 800-square-meter facility dedicated to recycling and reusing aquaculture equipment, including plastic-based floating collars. This is one of the largest facilities of its kind globally, with a focus on extending equipment lifespan and reducing the environmental footprint of the aquaculture industry.

This is a significant step toward a more sustainable future for aquaculture, as we focus on reusing and recycling equipment to reduce both resource consumption and environmental impact.

From plastic waste to resources

We don’t just talk about sustainability; we act on it. Used equipment is cleaned and assessed for reuse, repair, or ground into small pieces, known as flakes, which are then recycled by Hallingplast into new products. This process reduces environmental impact while also providing economic benefits.

The plastic hall at Hammarvika is equipped with large machines capable of grinding and granulating used plastic, enabling the transformation of discarded plastic into new aquaculture products.

Ambitions for the future

ScaleAQ Circular will initially employ 15 people, and the company plans to establish similar facilities in other parts of Norway, depending on regulatory adjustments. ScaleAQ also envisions that recycled plastic could become a central component in aquaculture’s structural designs in the future.

Plastic waste is a valuable resource that we can give new life.
